When Is It Time To Call In The Experts For Mold Remediation?

Noah Lauzier • November 6, 2023

Unfortunately, this is a question often asked but rarely answered correctly. The truth is, any time there is a visible mold issue in the home, it's time to call in an expert. This doesn't always mean that you need a full remediation on the property. This means bringing in an Indoor Environmental Professional. (IEP). The First step we always take with clients is recommending they have a certified mold testing professional come in to complete a test. They will typically take at least 3 air samples, and swab the actual mold. One air test is inside the affected area, one right outside the affected area(s), and then one "control" test, outside of the home. This will tell you the type of mold present inside of the home, and let the remediation professionals understand exactly what it is they're working with.

Here's the thing with mold remediation companies. A lot of them are downright shady companies that will practice business practices...that are less than reputable. It's an unfortunate reality in this line of work. Mold is scary, especially in the home. Some remediation companies will take advantage of this, using scare tactics to convince you that you need to spend top dollar to fix the issue. And then, when it comes time for the work to be completed -- they simply bleach and paint over the existing mold. Obviously, this is not effective. So, why are we talking about this? Because a lot of these companies will offer "free" testing, or complete the testing themselves. This is a direct conflict of interest.

It is imperative for the health of your home that you find a third party company to provide testing not only before but also after remediation work is completed.

So, in summary... if you see mold, it's better safe than sorry. There are over 100 mold variations. It is in your best interest to figure out which one of those 100 are in the home. It could be a harmless, common mold such as Ulocladium. It could also be the most dangerous mold, commonly known as "Black Mold," -- Aspergillus. The thing is, you cannot simply tell what type of mold is present in the home by a visual examination. It is imperative that these tests include swabbing AND air testing.

Also, if you see mold, and leave it for an extended period of time... it's spreading beyond what you can visually see. Sometimes it gets beyond your drywall, into the studs, insulation, subfloor, etc. So, it's a common misconception that you can just bleach the mold, and paint on top of it. Sure, you can't see it anymore. But it could still be there...costing you more and more money, as it eats away at whatever is behind the scenes. I'm not trying to scare you, this is just an unfortunate reality. Sometimes, the most expensive option is to do nothing.

what does mold smell like
By Noah Lauzier December 29, 2023
Mold typically emits a musty, stale odor that is often likened to the smell of wet socks or rotting wood. This distinctive scent is a byproduct of mold metabolism, releasing various microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs) into the air as it grows. These mVOCs can vary, producing a range of smells from damp and earthy to pungent and sour. The intensity and character of the mold smell can depend on the type of mold, the level of infestation, and where it's growing. For instance, black mold is notorious for a stronger, more noxious smell, akin to the earthiness of decaying leaves. If you notice a persistent odor that lingers despite cleaning, especially in areas that have been exposed to moisture, it may be an indication of mold presence.

No one likes being lied to, deceived, or especially, being taken advantage of. Unfortunately, there are companies out there that predicate on folks in this industry. They will outright scam you. First, they start off by introducing themselves, making you feel good about them/their company, and then once they earn your trust, they use every trick in the salesman's book to make you pay thousands more than you need to. How do I know this? Because, 1) I'm in the industry...and 2) I've been in sales my entire adult life.
